Conference description:
Popular approaches to relationship counseling emphasize
improving communication and trying harder to understand and meet the needs
of our partners. Such approaches lead themselves to the view that personal
unhappiness in marriage is the fault of our partner for failing to meet our
needs. Bowen family systems theory offers a different approach. How do we
maintain who we are as a person when in a committed relationship without
destroying the relationship? How do we enhance the relationship without losing
ourselves in the process? This conference will illustrate some of the differences
between conventional approaches to marital difficulties and the fundamentals
of relationship from the perspective of Bowen theory. The conference will
include a discussion of conflict in relationships and ideas about how to
address it.
This conference is for anyone who would like to
better understand the challenges of living in a committed relationship. This
includes clinicians, family and marital therapists, clergy, health care professionals,
physicians, lawyers, educators, and, of course, people in a committed relationship
or who want to be in a committed relationship.
Samaritan Counseling is pleased to have Dr. Daniel
Papero as our speaker for this conference. Dr. Papero is on the faculty at
The Bowen Center for Study of the Family, Washington, DC. He speaks about
innovative ways to address the many challenges facing individuals, couples
& families today. Dr. Papero is the author of Bowen Family Systems Theory.
